The life expectancy of most wood shake roofs is 18 to 20 years. The aging process of a shake roof accelerates during the second half of its life. Therefore, after the roof is approxiametely ten years old, maintenance should be considered by its owner, with the following options:
- Repairing roof where missing and/or damaged shakes are found & apply wood shingle shims wherever felt is exposed, between the wood shake keyways.
- Treating a shake roof with a 100% oil based treatment will slow the deterioration process; thus ensuring a full 20 years or more of life from your roof.
- Pressure washing wood shake is necessary only if an extensive amount of leaf debris & mulch build up are present. Otherwise, pressure washing is purely aesthical.
